LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTES (LDIs)
For the past 45 years, America’s Health Centers all across the country have grown and evolved into complex organizations with highly specialized and trained staff with expertise in finance, human resources management, clinical operations and health information technology. Today, health centers are located in 8,000 communities and serve over 20 million patients. In some instances, the health center is the only health care provider in the community or region, particularly in rural and remote communities. This senior executive team is charged with the responsibility to provide leadership and vision, and to possess the skill set essential to successfully lead these organizations.
Given the exponential growth of the Community Health Centers Program experienced under President George W. Bush, and now through comprehensive health care reform led by President Barak Obama, the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) and its affiliated State/Regional Primary Care Associations (S/RPCAs) have undertaken a comprehensive initiative to train the next generation of health center leaders. NACHC and S/RPCAs in collaboration with university faculties have developed model curricula for training health center leaders with a particular emphasis on training executive directors and chief executive officers, chief financial officers, chief medical officers, chief operating officers, human resource managers and mid-level managers.
NACHC and the S/RPCAs have focused on a number of key areas to address the present and future workforce needs through changes in state and federal policy and collaborations with public and private agencies that are charged with workforce training, and establishing partnerships with training and academic institutions to increase the pipeline of health professionals – both clinical and administrative.
