Introduction to Health Centers for Governing Board Members
Understand what it means to be on the board of a community health center and why a health center is unique compared to other health care providers. In this online, interactive, and free e-learning module, a health center board member can also learn about the development and early days of the Health Center Program. This is a great resource to introduce new board members to the Health Center Program.

On-line Video Training
Board Education Video Series – NACHC has developed a resource for health center board members to use at their monthly board meetings to learn about and discuss their role to assure patient-centered services and compliance with funding requirements. The Series currently has five “Modules” that each has brief video vignettes (approximately 5-6 minutes each) demonstrating scenarios of health center and board meeting operations. After viewing a vignette, the entire board can address suggested discussion questions, looking at their health center’s experience and their own roles as board members.
Governing Board Responsibilities and How to Do Them – This series of documents looks at nine governance requirements of the Health Center Program. Each document addresses a particular requirement and describes what board members can do to achieve their oversight responsibilities, including information for the board to receive (usually from staff) and review, questions for the board to ask, and the significance of particular answers on health center operations and viability. The guidance for each of the nine requirements can be downloaded for free by clicking on the title of this description. Governance Information Bulletins – This 19-document series provides information about health center board responsibilities and effective governance operations, and suggests best practices to address legal and regulatory governance requirements. Conference Trainings and Education Sessions
Board Member Boot Camp – This training is offered at both NACHC national conferences and provides new and veteran board members with an overview of four key governance responsibilities:
• Legal Responsibilities and Liability
• Administration/Personnel Policy and Procedure Development
• Financial Responsibilities
• Clinical Aspects of the Health Center
Strengthening the Board Chair/CEO Partnership – This six-hour training is offered at the NACHC Community Health Institute conference and includes participation of both the health center’s CEO and Board Chair. Through presentation, case studies, and interactive discussion, participants gain skills to support each other, optimize board resources, and plan and conduct board meetings that are engaging, productive, and enjoyable.
Education Sessions – NACHC conferences include education sessions where board members gain knowledge and skills of high-performing board operations and legal compliance requirements, as well as experience networking opportunities to learn from other board members via roundtable discussions.
